New York City Opera Singers to Perform Lunchtime Arias in Bryant Park

By Vivien Schweitzer
31 Jul 2006

New York City Opera will return to the Bryant Park stage this summer for "Afternoon Arias," its free lunchtime concert series, between August 15-18.

The program, which was inaugurated last year, features young singers from the company performing favorites from such operas as Bizet's Carmen, Puccini's La Bohème, Loesser's The Most Happy Fella, Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance, and Verdi's La traviata and Rigoletto.

The concerts begin at 12:30 p.m and will be hosted by presenters from 96.3 FM WQXR, the classical radio station of The New York Times. Jeff Spurgeon, the station’s morning host, will emcee on August 15, with evening host Midge Woolsey doing the honors on August 17 and 18.

The performances will continue at the Word for Word reading series on August 16 at the Bryant Park Reading Room. Cast members of Rent (based on La Bohème) will perform selections from the rock opera and City Opera singers will perform selections from Puccini's original.
