It hasn't been a good month for Valencia's brand-new Palau de les Arts, which recently saw a row between the city's Secretary of Culture, Ana Noguera, and Helga Schmidt, superintendent of the venue, over the latter's reportedly lavish expense budget. Now local citizens are angry about their inability to purchase tickets to Palau events.
The Valencia-based Las Provincias said that dozens of irritated locals expressed their frustration to the paper, such as Mercedes García, who said, "It's a shame, because there are always empty seats. I've been calling every ten minutes and I can't get through." Another would-be patron said she tried to call every half hour for an entire day, with no luck.
The Palau, which was inaugurated last October and begins a full concert and opera season this fall, does not yet sell tickets online. The venue is part of the Ciutat de les Arts i las Ciencias complex designed by superstar architect (and Valencia native) Santiago Calatrava.
The Valencia newspaper Levante had also previously reported that several major events had been double-booked for the same days at the Palau, but a look at the performance schedule on the venue's website indicates that those clashes have now been fixed.
