Ever Wanted to Be a Nibelung? Now's Your Chance, in Canadian Opera Company's Ring

Fans of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungs are a committed bunch: not only do they happily sit through the four-opera, 15-hour cycle, but it's not uncommon for them to fly across a country or even an ocean to do so.

Ring enthusiasts who want to take their devotion to the next level — or even the curious — may want to head to Toronto for the summer. The Canadian Opera Company (COC) has put out an open call for "supers" — that's supernumeraries, the operatic equivalent of extras in movies — for its upcoming Ring, the first staging of the full tetralogy in the country's history.

Rehearsals begin on July 8 and continue through the summer; performances, in three complete cycles, run from September 12 to October 1. The company's Ring is something of a baptism (of fire?) of its new home, the Four Seasons Centre, Canada's first purpose-built opera house.

While the COC's supers don't get paid, they do receive a small honorarium — plus the chance, as the company's press release/casting call puts it, "to see and hear opera from a unique perspective and … to work with some of the best performers and directors from Canada and abroad."

They're also looking for supers for the regular 2006-07 season. Information is available at the COC's web site, www.coc.ca.
