By Ben Mattison
05 Jun 2006

Scott Hendricks and Kelly Kaduce as Rochester and Jane

Opera Theatre of St. Louis presented the American premiere of Michael Berkeley's opera Jane Eyre last night. Soprano Kelly Kaduce sang the title role.

The opera has a libretto by David Malouf based on the novel by Charlotte Brontė. It premiered at England's Cheltenham Festival in 2000.

The St. Louis production, which runs through June 16, is directed by Colin Graham. Sets are by Erhard Rom, costumes by Jane Greenwood, and lighting by Mark McCullough.

Baritone Scott Hendricks plays Rochester; mezzo-soprano Robynne Redmon is Mrs. Fairfax. The cast also includes Elizabeth Reiter as Adele and Elizabeth Batton as Mrs. Rochester.
