Royal Opera Canada Cancels Six Performances

By Ben Mattison
05 Oct 2004

Artistic Director Dwight Bennett

Royal Opera Canada has canceled six performances of La traviata scheduled for Mississauga, Ontario, this week, the Mississauga News reports.

Mississauga's Living Arts Centre did not sell tickets to ROC's Traviata because the LAC was not convinced of the opera company's financial stability, an official at the venue told the News.

The opera was scheduled to run from September 30-October 9.

The ROC, once known as Opera Mississauga, changed its name in 2003 and said it would focus on traditional stagings of popular operas, rather than the avant-garde productions or new compositions performed by other companies. The company performs at the Toronto Centre for the Arts as well as the Living Arts Centre.

Artistic director Dwight Bennett told the News that ticket holders in Mississauga could see the same production at the TCA later in the month or get a refund. He added that he was optimistic that the ROH's production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin would go ahead as planned.

"The rest of the season, from my point of view, will [proceed as scheduled at the LAC], but I'm not the guy that makes these decisions," he said.

Royal Opera Canada has suffered from financial problems for several years, according to the News, and received C$100,000 in bailout funds from the Mississauga Arts Council earlier this year. But Bennett said that the company's financial condition had improved.
