Houston Grand Opera Details Design Teams for 2006-07

By Ben Mattison
24 May 2006

Houston Grand Opera's production of Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel next year will be designed and directed by the celebrated puppeteer Basil Twist, the company announced.

When the company announced its 2006-07 season in February, weeks before general director Anthony Freud began his tenure, it had not yet finalized plans for its productions of Hansel and Gretel, Verdi's Aida, and Janácek The Cunning Little Vixen.

Hansel and Gretel, the company said yesterday, will feature puppets in the style of Japanese bunraku; the witch will be more than 12 feet tall. Aida will feature new sets and costumes by British fashion designer Zandra Rhodes; Jo Davies will direct.

The Cunning Little Vixen will be a Chas Rader-Shieber production, with sets and costumes by David Zinn, imported from the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Soprano Lisa Saffer will sing the title role.
