Baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky has dropped out the Los Angeles Opera production of La traviata, which opens the 2006-07 season on September 9, due to "scheduling conflicts," the company announced.
Hvorostovsky will be replaced by Renato Bruson as Germont in Verdi's opera. The appearance will mark Brunson's company debut.
La traviata will also be performed on September 14 and 17. The cast includes soprano Renée Fleming and tenor Rolando Villazón as Violetta Valéry and Alfredo. James Conlon conducts Marta Domingo’s new production in his debut as music director. Lighting design is by Trevor Stirlin Burk and choreography by Kitty McNamee.
Bruson, a bel canto and Verdi specialist, made his operatic debut in 1961 with Il trovatore in Spoleto. He first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in 1969; debuts followed at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Covent Garden, and the Vienna State Opera. He has an association with Riccardo Muti dating to 1970.
