Wynton Marsalis Sidelined by Lip Problem

By Ben Mattison
08 May 2006

Wynton Marsalis

Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, has canceled an upcoming performance because of an injury to his lip, a JALC spokesperson confirmed.

Marsalis's quartet and the Orion String Quartet were to appear together at Rose Hall this week, performing the world premiere of a new work by Marsalis. The concerts, scheduled for May 11, 12, and 13, have been postponed until September 20.

In a previous release, JALC said the new, six-movement work was "based upon the dance rhythms of choro, waltz, blues, bossa nova, habanera, and African 6/8." The Orion also collaborated with Marsalis in 1995, premiering and recording his quartet At the Octoroon Balls.

Marsalis is expected to return for JALC's spring gala concert on June 5 at the Apollo Theater.
