By Vivien Schweitzer
30 Apr 2006

The National Philharmonic has announced its 2006-07 season at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda, Maryland, under music director and conductor Piotr Gajewski.

Fourteen subscription concerts will celebrate the birthdays and anniversaries of Elgar, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Philip Glass, and John Adams.

Highlights include concert presentations of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. The orchestra will perform the Maryland premiere of Joan Tower’s Made in America.

The soloist lineup includes New York Philharmonic principal cellist Carter Brey playing Elgar’s Cello Concerto, alto saxophonist Gary Louie playing Paul Creston’s Saxophone Concerto, and Polish pianist Piotr Paleczny performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1.

The National Philharmonic Chorale will perform Verdi’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Bach’s B-minor Mass with Chorale artistic director Stan Engebretson.

Russian soprano Tatiana Pavlovskaya and bass Nikolai Didenko will join the National Philharmonic for Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 14.
