Equity, the British actors' union, has sued Scottish Opera over its failure to hire two former choristers, the Scotsman reports.
Struggling with debt last year, the company eliminated 88 jobs, including its full-time chorus, and shut down for the entire 2005-06 season. At the time, the company promised that former chorus members would get first consideration for freelance appearances with the company.
The two former chorus members, who were not named by the Scotsman, auditioned for the Scottish Opera's upcoming production of Don Giovanni, which marks the company's return after its "dark year." They were rejected.
In its suit, Equity claims that the failure to hire the two singers, each of whom has more than 20 years of experience, constitutes a breach of contract. Opera officials told the Scotsman that the auditions were fair.
