Lyric Opera and Chicago Symphony to Give Free Concerts in September

By Vivien Schweitzer
24 Apr 2006

Chicago's Millennium Park will present free performances by the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Chicago Symphony Orchestra in September, the City of Chicago announced.

"Blockbuster Week" opens on September 9 with a Lyric Opera concert headlined by stars of the 2006-07 season, including Susan Graham and Patricia Racette accompanied by the Lyric Opera Orchestra led by music director Andrew Davis.

On September 11, Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company will present "Citizens of the World," Chicago's official September 11, 2001, commemorative performance, that will "combine music and storytelling to explore the idea of citizenship."

The week will close with two CSO concerts led by David Alan Miller. The concert on September 13 will include Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, Gang Chen and Zhanhao He's The Butterfly Lovers, and Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique. The September 14 performance will open World Music Festival: Chicago 2006; the lineup includes the Chicago-based Radio Maqam Ensemble, and pipa player Yang Wei, who will perform Tan Dun's Concerto for Pipa and Orchestra.

Millennium Park executive director Helen Doria said, "There is no other venue in the world that consistently offers the kind of great free public programs that Chicagoans can find in Millennium Park throughout the summer. This is never more evident than during 'Blockbuster Week,' when park visitors can experience four free performances by our city's most treasured gems — Lyric Opera, Steppenwolf, and the CSO."
