Montserrat Caballé Has Lived With Tumor for 20 Years

By Ben Mattison
11 Apr 2006

Montserrat Caballé

Soprano Montserrat Caballé was diagnosed with a tumor in her head more than 20 years ago, Germany's DDP news agency reports, citing an interview in the weekly Die Zeit.

Caballé told the paper that the New York doctors who first discovered the tumor told her that she had less than three years to live. But it proved to be benign.

Now, Caballé said, she thinks of the tumor as a "mean little friend whom I have to keep on eye on." Since her diagnosis, she added, life "is an even larger gift."

Caballé also told the paper that she dreams of starting an opera school, but said, "I simply don't have the money for it. I'm no tenor."
