Baritone Bryn Terfel, violinist Nicola Benedetti, and composer Karl Jenkins have each been nominated for two Classical Brit Awards, the British Phonographic Institute announced.
The awards, a seven-year-old spin-off of the Brit Awards for pop music, will be presented on May 4 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The nominations were announced today.
The BPI also announced that soprano Kiri Te Kanawa, choral conductor John Rutter, tenor Rolando Villazón, trumpeter Alison Balsom, and pop-classical tenor Vittorio Grigolo will appear at the awards. As previously reported, Plácido Domingo will perform and receive a lifetime achievement award.
Terfel, who won the male artist of the year award last year, was nominated for singer of the year and album of the year for Simple Gifts. (The male and female artist of the year awards have been replaced by singer of the year and instrumentalist of the year awards.) Benedetti was nominated for album of the year for her debut recital album and for best young British classical performer.
Jenkins' Requiem was nominated for the contemporary music award and album of the year.
The other nominees for singer of the year are soprano Renée Fleming and countertenor Andreas Scholl. Pianists Angela Hewitt and Leif Ove Andsnes and violinist Maxim Vengerov were nominated for instrumentalist of the year.
The nominations for album of the year, selected by the public, were dominated by crossover artists. In addition to Terfel, Benedetti, and Jenkins, the nominees are singer Aled Jones, singer and actress Amy Nuttall, the vocal trio The Choirboys, singer Hayley Westenra, boy soprano Joseph McManners, singer Robert Meadmore, and soprano Katherine Jenkins.
Nominations for ensemble or orchestral album of the year went to the Bournemouth Symphony, the City of Birmingham Symphony, and the Takács Quartet. The nominees for the critics' award, picked by reviewers from British publications, are the Belcea Quaret, pianist Boris Berezovsky, and the Royal Opera chorus and orchestra with tenor Plácido Domingo, conducted by Antonio Pappano. (The albums and performances cited were not specified.)
In addition to Benedetti, the other nominees for the young British classical performer award, chosen by the staff of Gramophone magazine, are soprano Kate Royal and Balsom.
