Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, Puccini’s Turandot, Mozart’s The Abduction From the Seraglio, and Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet will be part of Michigan Opera Theatre’s 2006-07 season.
The company's 36th season opens at the Detroit Opera House on October 21 with Porgy and Bess, featuring Gordon Hawkins, who made his company debut as Porgy in 1998, in the title role. Lisa Daltirus will sing Bess; Steven Mercurio conducts.
The Barber of Seville features Yasu Nakajima as Count Almaviva, Manuela Custer as Rosina, and Dalibor Jenis as Figaro, all making their company debuts. The production will be directed by Mario Corradi and conducted by Edoardo Muller.
Turandot includes the company debuts of Anna Shafajinskaya as Turandot and Luis Ledesma as Ping. Yu Qaing Dai returns to sing Calaf and Arutjun Kotchinian takes the role of Timur. Willie Anthony Waters, general director of Connecticut Opera, conducts.
The Abduction From the Seraglio also features a number of artists making company debuts, including Elizabeth Futral as Konstanze, Amanda Pabyan as Blondchen, and Shawn Mathey as Belmonte. The production will be directed by Dona D. Vaughn and conducted by Steven White, both making company debuts.
In Romeo and Juliet Jonathan Boyd returns to sing Romeo, partnered by Dina Kuznetsova making her company debut as Juliet. Kyle Pfortmiller returns to sing Mercutio; Lauren McNeese will debut as Stephano. Bernard Uzan directs; Mark D. Flint conducts.
