Paul Nadler, a frequent guest conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, will replace music director James Levine in the company's production of Beethoven's Fidelio, a spokesperson said yesterday.
Levine has canceled all of his appearances at the Met for the remainder of the season because of a shoulder injury that required surgery.
The revival of Jürgen Flimm's production of Fidelio opens on March 20 and runs through April 13. Soprano Karita Mattila sings Leonore; the cast also includes Jennifer Welch-Babidge, Richard Margison, Gregory Turay, Alan Held, Kristinn Sigmundsson, and James Morris.
Nadler was already scheduled to conduct the last performance of Fidelio.
Replacement conductors have not yet been named for the Met's new production of Donizetti's Don Pasquale with Anna Netrebko, Wagner's Lohengrin with Mattila and Ben Heppner, and Wagner's Parsifal with Heppner and Thomas Hampson.
Nadler debuted at the Met in 1989 and has conducted more than 40 performances there. He has also led Utah Opera, Minnesota Opera, Milwaukee's Florentine Opera, and other companies. In 2002, he conducted at the Kennedy Center Honors concert saluting Levine.
Later this year, Nadler will complete a 16-year tenure as music director of Fort Myers' Southwest Florida Symphony.
