Temirkanov to Miss More Baltimore Symphony Concerts

By Ben Mattison
13 Mar 2006

Baltimore Symphony music director Yuri Temirkanov has canceled six scheduled appearances with the orchestra between March 16 and March 26, a spokesperson confirmed today.

With the latest cancellations, Temirkanov has withdrawn from the entirety of a scheduled four-week stay with the BSO. When he canceled the first two weeks last month, his translator said that he was "distraught" over the death of Russian composer Andréi Petrov, a close friend. The BSO spokesperson said that the latest cancellations were made for the same reason.

The BSO's concerts this week, to feature Emanuel Ax in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9, will be led by French conductor Ludovic Morlot, the assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony. (Morlot also stepped in for an ailing Christoph von Dohnányi when the Dohnányi canceled concerts with the New York Philharmonic this month.)

This week's program also includes Yardumian's Armenian Suite and Stravinsky's Petrouchka.

Next week, concertmaster Jonathan Carney will lead an all-Mozart program from the orchestra.
