Opéra de Montréal's 2006-07 season will include the company premieres of Puccini's Il tabarro and Delibes' Lakmé, the company announced this week.
The one-act Il tabarro will be performed with Suor Angelica but not Gianni Schicchi, the third section of the Puccini triptych Il trittico. The cast includes soprano Turid Karlsen, baritone Grant Youngblood, tenor Marc Hervieux, soprano Marie-Josée Lord, and mezzo-soprano Robynne Redmon. Jean-Marie Zeitouni will conduct the Montreal Symphony; Alain Gauthier is the director.
Lakmé, a co-production with Australian Opera, will feature tenor Frédéric Antoun and soprano Aline Kutan. Adam Cook directs.
The season also includes Verdi's La traviata and Mozart's Don Giovanni, both with new sets. La traviata has not yet been cast; Don Giovanni will star baritone Aaron St. Clair Nicholson, bass-baritone Neal Davies, soprano Susan Gritton, soprano Lyne Fortin, and tenor John Tessier. Artistic director Bernard Lebadie will conduct Les Violins du Roy.
According to the Montreal Gazette, the company has traditionally presented five or six mainstage productions per year, but shrunk the upcoming season to four because of financial constraints. At a press conference, Labadie acknowledged that under the current financial structure "we have to sell way too many tickets to make it work."
Last fall, Opéra de Montréal announced that it would eliminate a planned revival of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex and Symphony of Psalms, scheduled for February, in order to save money.
