Pianist Lily Dumont Mindus Dies at 94

By Ben Mattison
08 Mar 2006

Lily Dumont Mindus, a German-born pianist who became a Boston-area institution, died on March 6, the New Bedford Standard-Times reports.

An accomplished pianist at a young age, Mindus debuted with the Berlin Philharmonic at the age of 15. During the Nazi era, she and her fiancé, surgeon Walter Mindus fled to the United States, settling in New Bedford.

After the move, Mindus continued her music career, performing as Lily Dumont in the United States, Europe, and Latin America, and recording for the His Master's Voice, Polydor, and Concert Society Labels.

She also taught, gave recitals on New Bedford's WNBH and Boston's WCRB radio, and helped bring international musicians to New Bedford's concert series.
