Soprano Violeto Urmana will sing the title role of Bellini's Norma, one of the most challenging in the soprano repertoire, for the first time later this month.

She will sing the role in a concert version of the opera at Dresden's Semper Oper on March 30, April 2, and April 4. Massimo Zanetti is the conductor; the cast also includes Carmen Oprisanu as Adalgisa, Andrea Ihle as Clotilde, and Woo-Kyung Kim as Favio.

Urmana began her professional career as a mezzo-soprano, but began to shift to soprano roles several years ago. Since 2002, she has sung Isolde, Tosca, Leonora in Verdi’s La forza del destino, and other roles. She will add Aida, Elisabetta in Verdi’s Don Carlo, and Amelia in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera to her repertoire over the next two years.

Norma, a role closely associated with Maria Callas, requires both the power of a dramatic soprano and the agility of a coloratura.
