Santa Fe Opera Gathers Former Apprentices for 50th-Anniversary Celebration

By Ben Mattison
26 Feb 2006

Santa Fe Opera will celebrate its 50th anniversary on August 12 with a gala concert featuring former members of the company's Apprentice Singer Program, including Joyce DiDonato, Beth Clayton, and William Burden.

Frederica von Stade, who appeared with the company early in her career (but was not an apprentice), will host the event.

Also scheduled to appear are Susanna Phillips, Mark Doss, Kurt Streit, Patrick Carfizzi, Hyung Yun, Karen Slack, and Barbara Quintialini.

The concert is part of a weekend-long reunion of former apprentices that will also include a barbeque and a performance by current apprentices. Apprentices wishing to attend should visit www.santafeopera.org or email Cassandra Furlow at cfurlow@santafeopera.org for more information.

Created in 1957, the Apprentice Singer Program has trained some 1,300 singers, including James Morris, Samuel Ramey, Neil Shicoff, and Michelle de Young.
