Plácido Domingo

Plácido Domingo's contract as general director of the Los Angeles Opera has been extended for five years through 2011, the company announced.

Domingo became artistic director of the Los Angeles Opera in 2000 and general director in 2003; 2011 will mark the 25th anniversary of his debut with the company.

L.A. Opera's recently announced 2006-07 season will be the first under incoming music director James Conlon; the lineup features 10 operas including three new productions and four house premieres. Star-studded casts include audience favorites Rolando Villazón and Anna Netrebko.

Domingo has also been with the Washington National Opera since 1996-97, first as artistic director and since May 2003 as general director. According to the Washington Post, his tenure with the WNO will also be extended for five years, although the company has yet to make an official announcement. Patrick J. Smith, the former editor of Opera News was quoted in the Post as saying, "The whole situation is unique because there has never been a general director who was the head of two major opera companies."

The 65-year-old Domingo also continues to sing and conduct regularly. According to the L.A. Opera, he has sung 122 roles, more than any other tenor in history.
