Dayton Opera Announces Season Plans

By Vivien Schweitzer
14 Feb 2006

The Dayton Opera's 2006-07 season will include Saint-Saëns' Samson et Delilah, Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore, and a new production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly.

Japanese-American Jun Kaneko, also known for his ceramic sculptures, is the set and costume designer for Madama Butterfly, which opens on October 21. The production premieres at Opera Omaha in March 2006.

Samson et Delilah returns to Dayton in March 2007 after a 26-year absence. The production uses an Opera Memphis set designed by Peter Dean Beck, which includes an on-stage collapse of the temple in the opera's finale.

In January the company will present H.M.S. Pinafore, featuring sets and costumes from Eugene Opera, depicting the full ship H.M.S. Pinafore on stage.

Singers and conductors will be announced at a later date.

The season closes with recitals on May 4 and 6 by soprano Ruth Ann Swenson, the company's 5th annual Dayton Opera Star Gala.
