Cecilia Bartoli Replaces Renée Fleming in Mozart Anniversary Concert

By Ben Mattison
25 Jan 2006

Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli has replaced soprano Renée Fleming in Salzburg's all-star concert celebrating the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth on January 27, the Mozarteum Foundation announced.

According to the foundation, which organized the high-profile concert, Fleming decided before the first rehearsal that she would not be able to sing the Mozart concert aria "Ch’io mi scordi di te" for "vocal reasons." She was also scheduled to sing the motet "Exsultate, jubilate" and the "Là ci darem la mano" duet from Don Giovanni.

Rather than substitute a different singer for a single aria, the foundation decided to replace Fleming altogether to "retain the integrity of the program." Fleming, according to a press release, "has graciously and respectfully accepted this decision."

Other soloists on the program include baritone Thomas Hampson, pianist Mitsuku Uchida, violinist Gidon Kremer, and violist Yuri Bashmet. The concert will be broadcast around the world on television and radio.
