San Francisco Ballet Principal Stephen Legate to Retire

By Ben Mattison
22 Jan 2006

Stephen Legate, a principal dancer at San Francisco Ballet since 1992, will retire at the end of the company's 2006 repertory season.

Plans for Legate's final performance have not yet been set. The repertory season runs from January 28 through May 7.

Legate trained at the National Ballet School of Canada and the School of American Ballet, and appeared with the National Ballet of Canada before joining San Francisco Ballet as a soloist in 1991.

With San Francisco Ballet, he has appeared in the lead roles of artistic director Helgi Tomasson's Romeo and Juliet, Lar Lubovitch's Othello, and many other works.

Legate plans to attend chiropractic college after his retirement.
