John Dankworth, Paul Hillier on New Year's Honours List

By Ben Mattison
03 Jan 2006

Paul Hillier

Jazz clarinetist and bandleader John Dankworth and choral conductor Paul Hillier were among the performing-arts figures included on Queen Elizabeth II's New Year's Honours List.

Dankworth, who has led a series of big bands and serves as musical director for vocalist Cleo Laine, his wife, was knighted. Hillier, the founder of the Hilliard Ensemble and artistic director of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.).

Tony Hall, the chief executive of the Royal Opera House since 2001, was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.B.E). Other music figures on the list include Welsh harpist Elinor Bennett, who received an O.B.E.
