Muti Threatens Lawsuit Against La Scala

By Ben Mattison
23 Dec 2005

Conductor Riccardo Muti has demanded that Milan's La Scala, his former employer, stop using his photograph, the Austrian Press Agency reports.

Citing an item in Milan's Corriere della Sera, the APA says that Muti's lawyer has threatened legal action if the opera house continues to sell Muti's picture in its gift shop or make use of it on his web site.

The music director at La Scala for nearly two decades, Muti resigned in April after weeks of conflict with labor unions promoted by the dismissal of superintendent Carlo Fontana.

"I had no choice," Muti said at the time. "The hostility put on display in such a crude manner by people whom I have worked with for almost twenty years makes it really impossible to pursue a working relationship, which should always be based on harmony and trust."
