Kristjan Järvi has signed a new contract with the Tonkünstler Orchestra that will extend his tenure as chief conductor through the 2008-09 season.

Järvi has led the orchestra, which is based in Vienna and nearby cities, since the beginning of the 2004-05 season. During his tenure, the group has toured to the U.K., Spain, and the Baltic states.

The youngest son of conductor Neeme Järvi, Kristjan Järvi is the founder of the Absolute Ensemble, a New York chamber group that plays music ranging from Baroque to rock. He is also the principal conductor of Sweden's NorrlandsOperan. From 1998 to 2000, he served as assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
