Doctor Atomic to Move to the Met in 2008-09

By Vivien Schweitzer
13 Dec 2005

The San Francisco Opera’s world-premiere production of John Adams’ Doctor Atomic will head to the East Coast for the Metropolitan Opera’s 2008-09 season, the Associated Press reports.

The San Francisco production, which premiered October 1 at the War Memorial Opera House, featured Gerald Finley in the title role of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and Kristine Jepson as Oppenheimer’s wife Kitty. No announcements have been made regarding casting for the Met version.

The opera is the fifth collaboration between Adams and director Peter Sellars, who also wrote the libretto for Doctor Atomic. The opera explores the final days before the first atomic explosion in New Mexico in 1945.
