Colorado Ballet Dancers Vote to Unionize

By Ben Mattison
02 Dec 2005

The dancers of the Colorado Ballet voted on November 30 to be represented by the American Guild of Musical Artists, according to AGMA.

The vote, conducted by the National Labor Relations Board, was 26 to 5 in favor of unionization.

The management of the company has welcomed the dancers' move to unionize. Interim executive director Lisa Snider told the Rocky Mountain News that unionization "happens when you are growing. There's a stature associated with being a union company."

Alan Gordon, the executive director of AGMA, said in a statement, "Colorado Ballet’s new management obviously respects its dancers’ desires and their concerns and recognizes that it shares a developing community of interest with the rest of the professional ballet world."

Colorado Ballet has had a difficult year. Executive director Rick Tallman resigned in April, followed by several other staff members. Shortly afterwards, choreographer Christopher Wheeldon threatened legal action when the company canceled its commission for his Alice in Wonderland . In October, longtime artistic director Martin Fredmann left angrily after management attempted to ease him into an emeritus position; weeks later, the company canceled several performances of The Nutcracker in order to save money.
