Photo Journal: Robert Wilson's Parsifal at L.A. Opera
By Ben Mattison
Avant-garde director Robert Wilson's production of Parsifal, with tenor Plácido Domingo in the title role, runs at Los Angeles Opera through December 17. The production is L.A. Opera's first ever of Wagner's late "stage-consecrating festival play." Wilson's typically spare production was first staged at the Hamburg State Opera in 1991. It has been revived in Los Angeles by stage director Nicola Panzer, set designer Stephanie Engeln, costume designer Frida Parmeggiani, and lighting designer A. J. Weissbard. L.A. Opera music director Kent Nagano conducts. In addition to Domingo, the company's general director, the cast includes Matti Salminen as Gurnemanz, Albert Dohmen as Amfortas, Linda Watson as Kundry, Hartmut Welker as Klingsor, and James Creswell as Titurel.
