Soprano Renée Fleming will appear on PBS's Great Performances series on November 30 in a special titled "Renée Fleming: Sacred Songs and Carols."
The program was recorded live at Mainz Cathedral in Mainz, Germany. Fleming is accompanied by the Deutche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, conducted by Trevor Pinock.
The program, much of which is drawn from Fleming's recent CD Sacred Songs, includes "Rejoice Greatly" from Handel's Messiah, "L'Adieu des Bergers" from Berlioz's L'Enfance du Christ, "Laudate Dominum" from Mozart's Mass in C minor, Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," and "Simple Song" from Leonard Bernstein's Mass.
In New York, the special will be broadcast at 8 p.m. on November 30 and 2:30 a.m. on December 1. Check local listings.
Also coming up on Great Performances is a broadcast of Stravinsky's opera The Nightingale on December 21. James Conlon conducts the Opéra National de Paris orchestra; soloists include Natalie Dessay. On January 1, 2006, PBS will broadcast the Vienna Philharmonic's traditional New Year's Day Concert; Mariss Jansons conducts.
During their December pledge drives, PBS stations will broadcast a performance by jazz crooner Michael Bublé and a Barbra Streisand special. A concert performance of the musical South Pacific taped at Carnegie Hall is planned for April 26.
A second Streisand special will be broadcast during PBS's March pledge drive. Planned for spring and summer 2006, but not yet scheduled, are a documentary about the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, which examines the troupe's recent tour to Russia and its move into an ambitious new space; a made-for-television version of Angels in America, Peter Eötvös's 2004 opera based on Tony Kushner's play; a documentary about the life and career of soprano Beverly Sills; and the Paris Opera Ballet in George Balanchine's Jewels.
