Chicago Opera Theater Announces 2006 Season

By Ben Mattison
22 Nov 2005

Chicago Opera Theater will present a rare performance of Charles Dibdin's The Padlock and the Chicago premiere of John Adams' Nixon in China in 2006, the company announced.

The Padlock, a one-act 1768 satire with a libretto by Isaac Bickerstafff and songs by Dibdin, an English songwriter, was last seen in the United States in 1769. The COT will perform the world premiere of an orchestration and adaptation by conductor Raymond Leppard.

The work will be performed February 15-19 on a double bill with Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, with mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer as Dido. Lillian Groag is the director; scenery is by John Conklin. Leppard will conduct.

Nixon in China, which closes the season May 17-21, will feature Robert Orth, who has sung the title role in productions around the country. Alexander Platt conducts; James Robinson is the director.

Also on the schedule is Mozart's Abduction From the Seraglio, conducted by Jane Glover, the music director of Chicago's Music of the Baroque. Justin Way directs. The production runs May 3-7.
