English National Opera Cancels Performance to Make Repairs

By Ben Mattison
16 Nov 2005

The English National Opera has canceled tonight's performance of Handel's Xerxes in order to perform "emergency stage maintenance."

"Following routine safety checks last weekend a potential problem came to light," a spokesman said in a email. "Therefore it was decided to move the dress rehearsal of Xerxes to Wednesday night to allow for stage maintenance which was carried out. "

Tonight was to be the first performance of a revival of Nicholas Hytner's acclaimed 1985 production of Xerxes. The production is scheduled to continue on November 19 and run through December 15. No other performances were affected.

Katarina Karnéus sings the title role of Xerxes; Noel Davies is the conductor.

The ENO's London Coliseum underwent a four-year, £41 million renovation between 2001 and 2004.
