By Ben Mattison
07 Nov 2005

Mary Plazas as Butterfly and Gwyn Hughes Jones as Pinkerton

Film director Anthony Minghella's staging of Puccini's Madama Butterfly opened at the English National Opera's London Coliseum on November 5.

The production marks the operatic debut of Minghella, the director of The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Cold Mountain. The cast includes Mary Plazas as Butterfly, Gwyn Hughes Jones as Pinkerton, and Christopher Purves as Sharpless.

David Parry, a longtime friend of Minghella, is the conductor; Carolyn Choa, Minghella's wife, is the choreographer. Sets are by Michael Levine, costumes by Hang Feng, and lighting by Peter Mumford.
