Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera of Chicago Among Organizations Receiving Grants From the American Express Company

By Emily Quinn
27 Oct 2005

The American Express Company today announced $1.3 million in grants to be awarded to American arts organizations including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Washington National Opera.

Philadelphia’s Mann Center for the Performing Arts, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and Cleveland’s Playhouse Square Foundation were also among the recipients.

The grants are part of the company’s Performing Arts Fund, which was created in 1997 to help arts organizations increase their audiences. In total, American Express has given over $10 million to more than 57 U.S. arts organizations.

The organizations will use the grants to “increase relevance and linkages with existing audiences as well as to attract new and diverse audiences to the arts.”
