Soprano Renée Fleming's Sacred Songs moved into the top spot on the Billboard classical chart this week, its third week on the chart.
Sacred Songs is a collection of religious music by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Schubert, and others, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Guest artists include mezzo-soprano Susan Graham and violinist Mark O'Connor.
Violinist André Rieu's The Flying Dutchman dropped from number one to number three in its third week on the chart, and Cecilia Bartoli's Opera Proibita moved from number three up to number two.
Simple Gifts, a blend of classical music, folk music, and pop tunes from baritone Bryn Terfel, debuted on the chart at number nine. Other new entries included a recording of Beethoven and Mendelssohn concertos from violinist Nikolaj Znaider and the Israel Philharmonic at number 18, the San Francisco Symphony's rendition of Mahler's Seventh Symphony at number 20 , and countertenor Andreas Scholl's Arias for Senesino, a recording of music written for the famous castrato by Handel and others, at number 23.
The biggest movers of the week included a recording of Mozart sonatas by violinist Hilary Hahn and pianist Natalie Zhu, which rose from number seven to number four in its second week on the chart, and Fleming's recording of Strauss's Daphne, which jumped from number 23 to number 11 after previously peaking at number seven.
Il Divo remained at the top of the classical-crossover chart, with Josh Groban's Closer at number two and Andrea Bocelli's Andrea at number three.
