Takács Quartet Signs with Hyperion

The Takács Quartet has left Decca, its longtime record label, for the British independent label Hyperion Records, the group announced.

The quartet will release approximately one CD a year for Hyperion, starting with a disc of Schubert's Death and the Maiden and Rosamunde quartets next year. Recordings of Brahms' string quartets and piano quintet will follow in 2007 and 2008.

The Takács signed with Decca in 1988, and has made 18 recordings for the label, a division of Universal.

“The move from Decca to Hyperion is mainly due to the greater flexibility of recording repertoire which Hyperion can offer us," first violinist Ed Dusinberre said in a statement. "Decca's marketing priorities are necessarily influenced by a tremendous pressure to choose and market projects that sell large numbers in the first year. String quartet recordings may not sell so dramatically at first but, if the group is touring visibly, CDs sell steadily over a long time period."

The Takács was founded in 1975 by four students, including violinist Gabor Takács-Nagy, at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest. Two of the original members, cellist András Fejér and violinist Károly Schranz, remain. Dusinberre joined in 1993; Geraldine Walther, a longtime violist with the San Francisco Symphony, replaced Roger Tapping last year.
