Opera Based on Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding Scandal to Premiere Next Spring

By Emily Quinn
13 Oct 2005

An opera based on the rivalry between figure skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding will premiere at Tufts University in spring 2006, the Boston Herald reports.

Kerrigan was attacked in the knee by an associate of Harding’s at the Olympic trials in 1994.

Abigal Al Doory, a graduate student at Tufts, is writing the music, and novelist Elizabeth Searle has written the libretto.

Nancy and Tonya: The Opera opens with the skaters’ press conferences at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer and features an aria created from Kerrigan’s famous lament “Why? Why? Why?” after she was attacked.

Searle said, “It was the primal scandal of our time. It took the country by storm.”

She noted that America is “full of Tonyas who want to be Nancys.”
