Philadelphia Orchestra Names Juliette Kang First Associate Concertmaster

By Emily Quinn
10 Oct 2005

Juliette Kang has been appointed first associate concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Kang joined the orchestra at the beginning of the 2005-06 season, arriving from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where she was assistant concertmaster.

She has also played in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra.

The Canadian-born violinist has won numerous awards, including the 1994 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and the 1992 Menuhin Violin Competition in Paris.

Kang studied with Jascha Brodsky at the Curtis Institute of Music and at Juilliard with Dorothy DeLay and Robert Mann. She has appeared with the symphony orchestras of San Francisco, Baltimore, Detroit, and Indianapolis, as well as orchestras in Europe and Asia.

She has appeared in many summer festivals, and in recitals at Paris’s Théâtre du Châtelet, Boston’s Gardner Museum, and New York’s Frick Museum.

In 1994, the New York Times Sunday Magazine featured her as one of 30 people under 30 “most likely to change the culture over the next 30 years.”
