Photo Journal: Ariane et Barbe-Bleue at New York City Opera

New York City Opera premiered a new production of Paul Dukas' rarely seen Ariane et Barbe-Bleue on October 6. The 1907 opera, which has a libretto by Maurice Maeterlinck, is a setting of the Bluebeard story, more famously told in Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle Renate Behle stars in the challenging role of Ariane. The cast also includes Ursula Ferri as La Nourrice, Laura Vlasak Nolen as Selysette, Georgia Jarman as Mélisande, Amanda Borst as Bellangere, Julianne Borg as Ygraine, Ethan Herschenfeld as Barbe-Bleue, Laura Knight-Keating as Alladine, and Lawrence Long as Un Vieux Paysan. American Symphony Orchestra music director Leon Botstein, a specialist in 20th-century rarities, is the conductor. Paul-Emile Fourny is the director.
