The Scottish Opera is looking to appoint a new chorus director even though it recently laid off its chorus, the Herald reports.
According to the Herald, an advertisement for the position was placed in Opera magazine.
The chorus was let go as part of part of the company’s bailout deal with the Scottish Executive. The deal, which resulted in 88 layoffs, also stipulated that the company shut down for the 2005-06 season.
The new director, who an opera spokesperson said would begin around November 2005, will find and work with freelance singers, and prepare them for next season’s spring performances.
The performers’ union Equity reportedly would like to talk over this latest development with Richard Jarman, the company’s interim director, and Richard Armstrong, an adviser. The paper quoted a source within the union, who said, “On the face of it, it looks a little concerning. Why have a chorus master but no chorus?”
The company holds, however, that filling the position is a positive step for Scottish Opera, indicating a return in the future to performing.
