Doctor Atomic Makes Another Cast Change as Opening Night Approaches

Thomas Glenn

Tenor Thomas Glenn has replaced Tom Randle in the world-premiere performances of John Adams' Doctor Atomic next month, San Francisco Opera announced.

Glenn will sing the role of the young scientist Robert Wilson in the opera, which tells the story of Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb. A fellow at the San Francisco Opera Center, Glenn has appeared several times with the company and has sung with Central City Opera and Ottawa's National Arts Centre Orchestra.

Like the replacement last month of Friedemann Röhlig with Richard Paul Fink in the role of Edward Teller, the latest switch "was made by the creators of the opera, who developed the role in a different direction during the course of the rehearsals," according to San Francisco Opera.

Librettist and director Peter Sellars said, "Tom Randle is a cherished artist and a long-time collaborator across many years. A brilliant performer, he was not well cast in the role as it evolved. We will continue to admire him and work with him, and we wish to honor the contribution he has made towards shaping this world premiere."

The addition of Glenn is the third cast change in the much-anticipated opera. Earlier this year, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who was originally scheduled to sing the leading role of Kitty Oppenheimer, dropped out because of a back injury and was replaced by Kristine Kepson.

Doctor Atomic runs October 1-22 at the War Memorial Opera House.
