Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli's Opera Proibita made its first appearance on the Billboard classical chart this week at number one.

Bartoli's album is a collection of music banned by the Catholic Church in 18th-century Rome; it includes works by Handel, Scarlatti, and Caldera. Conductor Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre accompany the singer.

Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble's Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon, which spent much of the spring and summer at number one, dropped to number four. EMI's new recording of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, with Plácido Domingo as Tristan, jumped from number 15 to number two in its second week on the chart.

A total of eight albums, several by prominent artists, made their first appearances on the chart this week.

Violinist Joshua Bell's compilation The Essential Joshua Bell debuted at number three; Renée Fleming's recording of Strauss's opera Daphne with the WDR Symphony is at number seven; the vocal group Chanticleer's Sound in Spirit appeared for the first time at number 16.

A collection of Taneyev's chamber music featuring Mikhail Pletnev, Vadim Repin, and Lynn Harrell debuted at number 19; Andrew Manze and the English Concert's Biber: Missa Christi Resurgentis is at number 20; soprano Deborah Voigt's All My Heart: American Songs is at number 20. A collection of Rachmaninoff's music for cello and piano by Alexander Ivashkin and Rustem Hayroudinoff made its first appearance at number 23.

The classical-crossover chart also includes several new entries. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Love Is Spoken Here, a collection of lullabies and other family-oriented songs, debuted at number three. Russell Watson's Amore Musica made its first appearance at number five; the Irish Tenors' Sacred is at number nine. Glasscuts, a compilation of Philip Glass compositions remixed by DJs, debuted at number 25.

Il Divo's debut album remained at number one on the chart, with Josh Groban's Closer at number two.
