New Orleans Opera has officially canceled its two fall productions because of the effects of Hurricane Katrina, Michigan's Grand Rapids Press reports.
Robert Lyall, the general director of the company, is also the artistic director of Opera Grand Rapids and is currently in Grand Rapids. He told the paper that New Orleans Opera had canceled productions of Verdi's Otello, scheduled for September 29 and October 1, and Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, scheduled for November 10 and 12.
According to the paper, the warehouse where the company stores its sets is likely under water. The condition of the Mahalia Jackson Theatre of the Performing Arts, where it performs, is unknown.
The destruction of New Orleans Opera's sets would affect other companies as well, John Peter Jeffries, the executive director of Opera Grand Rapids, told the paper.
"New Orleans Opera is one of the foremost rents of scenery and costumes in the country," he said. "They're having to warn people all over the country that they may not be able to meet the contract."
