Opera San José Finishes 21st Straight Profitable Season

By Emily Quinn
23 Aug 2005

Opera San José has finished its 2004-05 season in the black, the San José Mercury News reports.

The company operated at a profit for 20 years at its former venue, the Montgomery Theater. The amount of the current surplus was not made available, but the company reported itself profitable even after last fall’s move to the California Theatre, which has twice as many seats as the Montgomery, and after increasing its budget by more than half, to $4.4 million.

Ticket sales were up, despite prices that were increased by an average of $27, as were subscriptions and contributions.

Irene Dalis, the company’s general manager, said, “As we enter our second season [at the California], we hope this extraordinary venue continues to generate civic pride. We have demonstrated that we can spread our wings artistically in such a glorious theater, and we plan to build upon our success.”
