Conductor William Eddins Launches Podcast

By Ben Mattison
17 Aug 2005

William Eddins

William Eddins, the newly appointed music director of the Edmonton Symphony, will launch a Podcast this month, the orchestra announced.

A Podcast is a periodic radio program delivered over the Internet; Podcast software automatically checks for the latest episode and downloads it onto a computer or digital music player, such as an iPod. The technology has existed for about a year, but it has grown rapidly in popularity since Apple, creator of the iPod, added Podcast support to its iTunes software last month.

Eddins' Podcast, titled "Classical Connections," will include discussions of classical-music history and performances of chamber music. The first episode, which will be available free through Apple's iTunes music store on August 21, will include music by Debussy and Copland. Drew McManus, a music administrator and blogger, will be Eddins' guest.

According to the ESO, Eddins' Podcast will be "one of the first of its kind." A search of the iTunes store found few classical Podcasts and none hosted by high-profile musicians. Other available Podcasts include a season preview from the San Francisco Opera, a selection of new recordings from the label Naxos, and a program produced by the opera web site Parterre Box.

In addition to his post in Edmonton, Eddins is principal guest conductor of the National Symphony of Ireland. He was on Daniel Barenboim's staff at the Chicago Symphony for ten years, as assistant, associate, and resident conductor. He has also served as associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra and as an assistant to Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera.
