Giant Photographs of Minnesota Orchestra to Adorn Concert Hall

By Emily Quinn
10 Aug 2005

Minneapolis’s Orchestra Hall will soon be partially covered with large-scale photographs of the Minnesota Orchestra and music director Osmo Vänskä, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

About a quarter of the hall’s exterior will be covered in computer-generated images nearly 65 feet high for the opening of the orchestra’s season on September 14. The murals will be in place for at least a few months, and perhaps for the whole season.

David Sailer, the orchestra’s co-director of marketing, said, “The idea was literally to turn Orchestra Hall inside out, to take the experience of what happens inside the hall and present it on the outside.”

The photographs of Vänskä and the musicians are existing images taken by photographers Ann Marsden and Greg Helgeson, who also shot new images of audience members for the mural.

Of his 65-foot-high image, Vänskä said, “I had to accept it. It’s another question if I like it.”
