David Pittsinger as the Hotel Barber and William Burden as Aschenbach

Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice runs through August 21 at Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, New York.

The opera, Britten's last, has a libretto by Myfanwy Piper, who also collaborated with the composer on The Turn of the Screw and Owen Wingrave. Based on the novel by Thomas Mann, it tells the story of a famous writer who visits Venice and becomes obsessed with a beautiful young man.

The Glimmerglass staging, a co-production with New York City opera, is directed by Tazewell Thompson. Sets are by Donald Eastman, costumes by Carrie Robbins, and lighting by Robert Wierzel.

The cast includes tenor William Burden as the writer Aschenbach and Scott Chiba as Tadzio, the young man. Stewart Robertson conducts.
