The Los Angeles world premiere of What to Wear?, a new opera by composer Michael Gordon and playwright Richard Foreman, has been postponed, a spokesperson for the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater confirmed today.
The opera was to debut on September 18, opening the fall season at the venue, known as REDCAT. It has been postponed until fall 2006.
Foreman, who is also the director of the new work, asked for the delay for medical reasons. According to the Los Angeles Times, he recently underwent triple-bypass surgery.
What to Wear? was described in an earlier press release as a "nonlinear opera" and a "surreal extravaganza." Foreman is founder and director of New York's avant-garde Ontological Theater and a mainstay of the East Village theater scene. His many plays include Now That Communism is Dead, My Life Feels Empty and Pearls for Pigs. Gordon is a founder of Bang on a Can and composer of the science fiction opera Chaos and the multimedia work Gotham.
A replacement has not officially been announced, but according to the Times, Erase-E(x), a dance-theater piece by choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, dancer Johanne Saunier, and scenic designer Jim Clayburgh, will be added to the schedule.
