City of Birmingham Symphony Auctions Chance to Conduct

By Ben Mattison
30 Jul 2005

The opportunity to conduct England's City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is currently up for auction on the web site eBay.

The winner of the auction, which opened on July 27 and runs through August 5, will get a conducting lesson from CBSO music director Sakari Oramo before leading the orchestra in rehearsal at Birmingham's Symphony Hall. The aspiring maestro (or maestra) will also receive accommodations in Birmingham and will dine with musicians and executives from the CBSO.

The posting notes that "Sakari Oramo's time in the UK is limited and therefore all arrangements must be made around his schedule."

As of yesterday afternoon, one bid of £1,000 had been made.

The proceeds of the auction will support the CBSO's education and outreach programs, which include music programs for the elderly and for children with disabilities.
